Former Kampala Central Member of Parliament candidate Suzan Kushaba has raised concerns over the recent demolition of structures at St. Balikuddembe Market, one of Uganda’s largest marketplaces located along Ssebaana Road beside the Nakivubo Channel.
The demolition occurred late on Saturday night at around 10:00 p.m., leaving traders and residents shocked.
Speaking during Sanyuka Morning Xpress on Tuesday, Kushaba highlighted what she described as irregularities in how the demolition was conducted.
“KCCA is aware of the demolition that happened. The KCCA market master was also aware and is the one who informed the traders that the place was going to be demolished,” she said.
Kushaba questioned the legality and justification of the demolition, emphasizing that proper government authorization should have been obtained.
“For any demolition to take place, the government should be aware. That market belongs to the government, so why was it demolished?” she asked, calling for clarity and accountability from city authorities.
The demolition has drawn widespread attention because St. Balikuddembe Market is a key economic hub in Kampala, hosting hundreds of traders and serving thousands of residents weekly.
Observers said the nighttime timing and sudden execution of the operation disrupted livelihoods and raised questions about transparency and due process.
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) confirmed on Monday that arrests have been made and investigations launched regarding the demolition, labeling it illegal.
KCCA urged the public to remain calm as law enforcement continues its inquiries.
Police have also promised updates once investigations are concluded.
